Policies
Cancellation Policy
PART A
All classes are forecasted, which means the schedule for training is forward looking. However, though forward looking, life circumstances cannot be predicted; which depending upon the nature of the circumstance(s), cancellation may be warranted. It is herein understood that cancellation of classes as a whole is determined by the instructor for the benefit of all involved, which may include but are not limited to the following:
- The unavailability of the Instructor/RSO.
- The unavailability of the training grounds.
- The absence of student materials, or training aids.
- The minimum student registrations having not been achieved.
PART B
1. Student registration for firearms education and training is considered a very serious endeavor; so much so, that expenses are fronted on behalf of the prospective student when they register for a class. In point of fact, the student's seat and materials are paid for in advance as a guarantee in anticipation of the student's arrival, and for the ease of administrative in-processing. However, the instructor may cancel a class for reasons that may prohibit the effectiveness or educational or training value of said class if in the instructor's view it is prudent to do so, which should ultimately inure to the benefit of the student primarily, and all others in general. Such instances may be, but are not limited to: natural castastrophe's (i.e., flooded roadways/breaks/closures, power outages, earthquakes, mudslides, toxic fumes, forest fires, viral epidemics/pandemics, lightening strikes, etc.), severe weather warnings, hazardous road conditions, severe storms, torrential rains, lightening, floods, snow, ice, sleet; the destruction or impairment of the training or range facility or access ways, and the like.
2. Additionally, while classes may be cancelled, not all may be cancelled for the same reasons. If a scheduled class requires live training or shooting on the range; it may be cancelled having been overcome by events such as: hazardous or severe weather conditions, which being: snow, sleet, hail, torrential rains, flooded out training areas, and the like would make it impractical to conduct outdoors. Decisions such as these are in the best interests of the prospective student as well as others that may take part in the instructional presentation or participation. Furthermore, in like situations such as are mentioned herein of this paragraph, the registration fee will be credited toward an upcoming or future scheduled class date or class offering, as we cannot be responsible for Acts of God or other natural occurences. Concomitently, responsible decision-making greatly contributes to a safer training environment for all concerned.
3. Conversely, a scheduled class that does not have a live range component or live shooting requirement may not be cancelled provided the classroom environment is suitable for education, and/or simulation training, and may continue because there would be no live range or live shooting requirement to be fulfilled.
PART C
1. Firearms training classes are filled on a Space A (Space Available) basis. These spaces are limited due to size of venue, or range conditions, and/or availability of appropriate personnel to safely conduct training. Once a class is full, no additional student will be accepted. If a student fails to cancel prior to the class date or fails to show up on the date of the scheduled class, they may have prevented someone else from filling that vacancy, or availed space. Please be sure to read the course description(s) carefully and completely, and adequately prepare for your training. Further, that necessary equipment is available (on-hand) to attend the training BEFORE attending the course. If uncertain about any of the above, do not hesitate to contact the instructor.
2. As a usual course students are required to cancel at least 72 hours in advance of a class date in order to be rescheduled for a future course. We understand that life events may arise such as: illness, family emergencies and/or other significant circumstances which may preclude a student's attendance for training. Should this occur, simply notify us before the scheduled class in accordance with the above, and the registration fee will be credited to an upcoming or scheduled event of choice. In a like manner, without prior notification and/or less than 48 hours before the class, no rescheduling opportunity will be available. Therefore, it is very important that you communicate with your instructor regarding all forseeable instances.
Reschedule Policy
1. If a scheduled class is rescheduled by the instructor due to situations or circumstances mentioned in the Cancellation Policy, rescheduling to an upcoming or future class date will be offered.
2. NO SHOWS: "No Shows" are defined as prospective students who do not give prior notice of their intent not to show up for the scheduled course start time or fails to request the cancellation or rescheduling of their session, and/or who does not show up for the scheduled course with no communication. There will be no course transfers or rescheduling offered to the prospective students who are no-shows.
Refund Policy
NO REFUNDS:
Course and registration fees are non-refundable. In the event that a student is unable to attend a course and provides at least 72 yours notice, the fee may be transferred to another student or applied to a future course, where possible. Transfers must be declared within four (4) months of the missed session. One transfer is allowed per student per calendar year. "No shows" and cancellations within 72 hours of the scheduled course will forfeit all transfer opportunities.
Other Policy
SAFETY FIRST!
In all that we do, it is incumbent upon every participant to be vigilant, adhere to, and promote safety any and every where possible!
SAFETY VIOLATIONS:
A Safety Briefing is given at the beginning of each class and before going onto the shooting range. Throughout the training session the safety rules will be emphasized. If a student violates the safety and range policies and procedures after having been briefed, the student will be dismissed from the training session. No rescheduling opportunity will be extended.
THE TRAINING CONTINUUM:
Regardless of weather, unless hazardous conditions exist, training will continue. In the event of inclimate weather, it will be necessary to bring weather appropriate clothing and gear with you. The same applies for cool or cold seasons. Please wear the appropriate gear to your training event; this will include foot gear that is outdoors, weather, and range appropriate. Absolutely no open-toe shoes, flip-flops, or sandals are to worn on the range. No exceptions.
CLASSROOM:
STUDENTS MUST LEAVE ALL GUNS AND LIVE AMMUNITION SECURED IN THEIR LOCKED VEHICLE UNLESS OR UNTIL SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED TO RETRIEVE THEM.
RANGE:
PLEASE READ AND COMPLY WITH ALL RANGE RULES AND POLICIES.
FAILURE TO TRAIN:
Anyone who repeatedly displays improper gun handling skills or behaves in an unsafe manner will be dismissed from the training premises. No rescheduling opportunity will be offered.
MISBEHAVIOR:
Any student exhibiting childlike, or irrational behavior, or who is suspected of being under the influence of any intoxicants will not be allowed to participate in any training activity, and will further be expelled from the premises. No exceptions. No rescheduling opportunity will be offered.
SPECIAL NEEDS:
Students that have special needs must bring with them the appropriate gear to meet their special needs, to include water, foods, and/or prescribed non-intoxicating medicines needed for the duration of the training event. Any medications, regardless of whether lawfully prescribed, that will alter a student's state of mind, or judgment, or coordination, or concentration will not be permitted to train. Safety First.
Waiver
Students will review and sign a Safety/Release of Liability Waiver for Firearms Training upon arrival and sign-in. If no waiver is signed, no class can be conducted. No exceptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. All instructors are certified through either the United States Concealed Carry Assoiciation (USCCA), or the National Rifle Association (NRA), and/or the North Carolina Criminal Justice Traning and Standards Commission (NC DOJ/NCJA) (as may be appropriate for the North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun Training Course, and carries a certified Criminal Justice Concealed Carry Handgun Instructor designation), and have either military, law enforcement, government, EMT, or other pertinent background designations/certifications.
Do all instructors that present training possess professional liability insurance?
Yes. All instructors that present training carry Professional Liability Coverage/Insurance.
Do you offer Laser training or SIRT training?
Yes.
Do you operate a Smokeless or Virtual range?
Yes. Specifically, the Smokeless Range 2.0 is available and often used for first time shooters or beginners, during Use of Force Scenario/Simulation Training and Marksmanship Fundamentals Training with Laser and/or Recoil Enabled Laser Training Pistols when appropriate or scheduled as a course of instruction.
Do you have classes for children or youth?
Yes. We do teach or provide training for mature-minded children and youth that is age appropriate. This training is conducted only with the consent and in the presence of the parent(s) or legal guardian(s). However, an initial briefing will be for the Parents Only, first.
Is your range far away, and is it enclosed or outdoors?
As to whether the partnered facility is far away is subjective, and can only be answered by the person desiring to make use of it. Often times, the determination is needs based, when considering distance. Depending upon the type of training you desire or the goals and objectives you are attempting to meet or accomplish; what may be many miles away for others, could be just local to you! Distance is relative to your needs, goals and training objectives. Additionally, the range is outdoors where Live Fire, Shoot-On-The-Move, and Draw-from-the-Holster drills can be conducted, but is also co-located where a small classroom building is used for Indoor Education and Simulation Training as well. Many find this more advantageous in the development and/or honing of their skills.
Do you offer Force on Force or Simunition training?
No. We donot offer FOF or Simunition training.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes. Serveral types of discounts are offered from time to time and periodically. Some discounts are static while others are periodic and meet with short expirations, or cut-off times. During registration, if there is a discount listed be sure to capture it when doing so. At times, their are ALUMNI, LEGACY, and SMALL GROUP discounts offered, which are course dependent. Ask the Instructor for the details.
Is there a registration cut-off?
Yes. The preferred registration is 7 business days prior to the class start date. On rare occasions registration fall within the 2 business days. Though registrations are accepted 1 business day prior, it does not guarantee the same preparation that is afforded those who register early; under this circumstance course fees must be completed prior to the class start; however, there is no guarantee that individual classroom materials will be available.
The pre-registration allows time for all administrative functions to be completed prior to the student's arrival. Due to accountability measures, walk-in's are not usually accepted. This is particularly serious: These are firearms education and training course(s) and all deference and due diligence is given its due regard to ensure that each student is provided quality instruction from certified professional instructors and safety officers.
Why do I have to register?
Great question! The task of preparing for student arrival is of paramount importance to ensure that each student have a positive educational and training experience. Each registered student have paid their course fee and have a guaranteed seat. This also ensures logistical measures have been taken to meet any special needs that some students may have. Additionally, it is necessary to ensure classroom materials are procured and are made available for each registered student.
Are walk-ins accepted?
Only under the most exceptional of circumstances will Walk-in's be accepted. In so doing, the walk-in will not be guaranteed course support materials, nor will the course fee be discounted, which is why Walk-in's are highly discouraged. Prior Planning and Accountability is of utmost importance, and is necessary in cases of cancellation, for the allowance of time to fill this now empty student slot. See the cancellation, rescheduling, and refund policies.
Do I have to own a firearm to take a firearms training class?
No. Though it is preferred that the student bring their personally owned firearm with them so as to gain confidence, proficiency and mastery of its use and function; many people do not personally own a firearm, and the reasons for such may abound. Our focus is upon the student, their education and training, not their otherwise personal decisions. While it may seem reasonable and natural to expect that one may be a gun owner, this is not our prerogative. If a firearm is not owned, we would prefer to train the student, make available to them the appropriate implement by which to develop skill that will instill such confidence, that they may become a responsible gun owner(s) should they decide on making a future purchase for personal protection and home defense. Most often, a firearm, if necessary, can be made available, usually on a rental basis for in-training purposes only. Be sure to ask the instructor of its availability.
Do I have to be 21 years old in order to take the Concealed Carry Handgun Training Course?
No. In the State of North Carolina, you have to be 21 years of age in order to be issued a Concealed Handgun Permit.
If my Concealed Handgun Permit expires will I have to re-take the Concealed Carry Handgun Training Course?
Yes. In the State of North Carolina the only way to provide proof of training is by attending the State approved training course that meets the State's mininum standards, and upon having successfully completed said training receive a serialized Certificate of Training necessary to re-apply for your NC Concealed Handgun Permit.
Can I take the NC Concealed Carry Handgun Training Course Online?
No. The State of North Carolina, TO DATE, has no such online training apparatus available.
Can I apply for my NC Concealed Handgun Permit online?

WOMEN'S BASIC PISTOL
5 stars
From: Francella M.
"My experience with PREFDEF COUNTERSTEP (Mr. Mitchell) has been nothing but stellar. His preparation and delivery has been top-notch and on-point. I have taken many classes from him, and just recently completed a Women's Basic Pistol course where he took his time and exercised patience and understanding as he led us through the fundamentals of pistol marksmanship. We had a safe and fun time at an outdoor range and did plenty of shooting to nail down and bake in these fundamentals. I can't wait for my next class. I'm certain he will do the same for you!"
