The NRA’s Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training (FIRST) program is specifically designed for new pistol owners who want a strong foundation in safe firearm handling. This orientation provides a step-by-step introduction to the essentials of pistol safety, operation, and responsible ownership.

Students learn proper handling, storage, and maintenance practices, along with the fundamentals of marksmanship. The course combines classroom instruction with hands-on exercises to ensure participants leave with the knowledge and confidence to safely operate their firearm.
Expectations and Outcomes
“Upon successful completion, students will receive an NRA FIRST Steps Course Completion Certificate. This certificate may meet the training requirement to apply for a concealed carry permit in most states.”
