Description
The NRA’s Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training (FIRST) program is specifically designed for new pistol owners who want a strong foundation in safe firearm handling. This orientation provides a step-by-step introduction to the essentials of pistol safety, operation, and responsible ownership. Students learn proper handling, storage, and maintenance practices, along with the fundamentals of marksmanship. The course combines classroom instruction with hands-on exercises to ensure participants leave with the knowledge and confidence to safely operate their firearm.
Topics Covered
“Students will be introduced to the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, learn the parts and operation of their specific pistol model, understand ammunition basics, practice fundamental shooting skills, and receive instruction on cleaning and maintenance. The course also provides guidance on continued skill development. On the range, students will complete live-fire training and demonstrate proficiency through a nationally standardized shooting qualification under the supervision of an NRA Certified Instructor.”
Expectations and Outcomes
“Upon successful completion, students will receive an NRA FIRST Steps Course Completion Certificate. This certificate may meet the training requirement to apply for a concealed carry permit in most states.”
