- Selecting and patterning defensive ammunition
- Choosing modifications and accessories - what's good, what's bad, and why
- Use of modern recoil mitigation techniques (push/pull, or "stretching")
- Employment from various ready positions
- Employment around cover or concealment
- Close quarters retention considerations
- Nomenclature and mechanical operation
- Safe storage and ready conditions, including closet/cruiser ready
- Care and maintenance
Types
Basic, Intermediate, In Home Defense Training, Shotgun
Requirements
Required equipment:
- A pump action or semi-automatic 12 or 20 gauge shotgun (12 gauge strongly preferred due to availability of suitable defensive ammunition). The course is designed specifically for these types of shotguns; if you have something exotic like a bullpup shotgun or box magazine 3-gun style shotgun, many of the drills are not going to be suited for your gun, and you won’t get as much out of the class.
- Eye and ear protection (amplified hearing protection strongly encouraged)
- At least 60 rounds of birdshot
- At least 5 rounds of buckshot
- A bag or case used to transport your shotgun to and from your vehicle, the firing line, and the safe area
- Side saddle (receiver-mounted) or buttstock mounted ammunition carriers (useful, but not required)
- Amplified hearing protection (we have loaner hearing protection, if needed)
- Towel to cover your shotgun when it is resting on a table or barrel at the firing line, to keep it from becoming scorching hot in the sun
- See the general policies page for suggestions on food, drink, clothing, etc.Note: This is not a class where you will utilize quad loaders, plate carriers, chest rigs, etc. It is extremely unlikely that you are going to be wearing John Wick shotgun ammunition carriers on your body when someone kicks down your door. You will have to fight with the ammunition in and on your shotgun, and we will run shotguns in this class accordingly.
