Description

The essential information and drills pistol shooters new to slide-mounted red dot pistols need to know. A limited number of loaner guns will be available for those that want to try red dot pistols before upgrading or purchase their own.

Note: this class will NOT include discussion of laser sights that project a laser onto the target. It will focus on slide mounted red dot sights like the Trijicon RMR, Deltapoint, Holosun, Swampfox, and similar.

Level 1 is for shooters new to mounted pistol optics, including those that want to use a loaner gun for class.

Requirements

Required Equipment: A handgun with a slide mounted red dot, belt holster, 150 rounds of ammunition for level 1, 200 rounds for level 2, at least 2 magazines, magazine pouches, eye and ear protection.

Prerequisites:
Ability to pass the 5x5 shooting test using iron sights (5 shots into a 5" circle, in 5 seconds, from 5 yards, preferably starting with gun holstered and drawing from open carry, or starting from a ready position, finger off trigger.)

That level of shooting skill is higher than what is required to pass the Texas License to Carry shooting test.

A person with weak marksmanship or gun-handling skills may feel somewhat left behind. You may still be able to participate safely, but may not feel that the class is the best use of your time and ammunition.

Students not yet at that skill level are welcome to take any of our lower level courses, such as Basic Pistol 2 or Beyond Basics, using a pistol with a red dot, to prepare for the Red Dot Essentials class.

Faster and more accurate shooting and gun-handling skills beyond the carry permit level (malfunctions, reloads under stress) such as what is taught in Defensive Pistol Skills 1 and Defensive Pistol Skills 2 will be very helpful.
