Description
The essential information and techniques pistol shooters new to slide-mounted red dot pistols need to know. This class assumes the student is not yet proficient drawing from a holster.
Note: this class will NOT include discussion of laser sights that project a laser onto the target. It will focus on slide mounted red dot sights like the Trijicon RMR or SRO, Sig Romeo, Deltapoint, Holosun, and similar.
Level 1 is for shooters new to mounted pistol optics, who have passed Basic Pistol 1 and 2, including those that want to use a loaner gun for class to try red dot pistols before upgrading or purchase their own.
Taught by Dave Reichek and/or Doug Greig
Topics Covered
- Zeroing
- Safely drawing from a holster (open carry)
- Proper grip techniques (a poor grip makes "finding the dot" consistently much more difficult)
- Presenting the gun from efficiently in a manner that facilitates consistently finding the dot
- Target focus
- Strong hand shooting
Expectations and Outcomes
The student should be able to safely and efficiently present the gun and consistently "find the dot" from the holster and various ready positions. The student should be ready to take Defensive Pistol 1 after completing this class.
Types
Basic, Specialty Other
Requirements
Required Equipment:
- A handgun with a slide mounted red dot
- Kydex or leather belt holster that fully covers the trigger guard and allows for reholstering one-handed
- 150 rounds of brass or steel cased ammunition
- At least 2 magazines (3 is strongly desired)
- Magazine pouches
- Eye and ear protection.
Prerequisites: Graduate of Basic Pistol 1 and 2 or equivalent.
A person with weak marksmanship or gun-handling skills may feel somewhat left behind. You may still be able to participate safely, but may not feel that the class is the best use of your time and ammunition.
Students not yet at that skill level are welcome to take any of our lower level courses, such as Basic Pistol 2 or Beyond Basics, using a pistol with a red dot, to prepare for the Red Dot Essentials class.
Faster and more accurate shooting and gun-handling skills beyond the carry permit level (malfunctions, reloads under stress) such as what is taught in Defensive Pistol Skills 1 and Defensive Pistol Skills 2 will be very helpful.
