Description
This course is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their defensive firearms skills and develop the expertise needed to instruct others in safe and effective firearm use. Participants will learn enhanced shooting techniques, tactical and practical applications, and instructional methodologies to train students in real-world defensive settings. We will take an in depth look at those skills typically viewed as fundamental skills as well as those skills we term essential skills as they relate to the defensive use of a firearm
Course Highlights:
Firearms safety and legal considerations for teaching the defensive use of a firearm
Trauma Med considerations and briefing
Shooting Fundamentals
Enhanced Marksmanship and Weapon Handling (process vs outcome)
Instructor development: coaching, curriculum design, and student assessment
This program is ideal for aspiring firearms instructors, law enforcement personnel, security professionals, and responsible citizens committed to self-defense and is equally suited to the enthusiast who just wants to perform better in a competitive setting.
This is not a "participate and get a certificate" kind of course. There will be no less than 5 graded evaluations, 3-5 live fire and 2 presentation/range management evaluations. Graduates will maintain a 90% or higher average on the evaluations.

The link above is to a shooting illustrated article with a chart from John Hearne, we recommend at least the center line of the chart representation of skill, the border between "some automaticity" and "strongly suggests automaticity". The farther your skill set is to the right of the chart, the easier the live fire course work will be.
But, no surprises we will tell you exactly which live fire drills/quals we are testing for your class, approximately 6 weeks prior to the start of your course.
Topics Covered
Range Management
Fundamental Skill Development
Essential Skill Development
Accuracy at Speed Considerations
Teaching Techniques and Concepts
Course Consideration and Design
Teaching Technical Skills
Delivering a Proper Demonstration
Critical Evaluation Skills
Coaching Concepts and Principles
Expectations and Outcomes
You will be tested! This course includes several live fire "qualifications" such as the current FBI qual and the "graduate" of this program will have a cumulative shooting performance average of 90% or above. There are no tricks, we only use nationally recognized courses of fire, drills and qualifications.
We believe very strongly in "practicing skills not drills", and we will do all that we can to help you raise your current skill level in the time allowed.
You will be assigned a live fire drill for the range management evaluation. Effectively you will conduct a 15 minute presentation of a live fire skills drill, explanation, demonstration and then live fire practical application.
Approximately 6 weeks before the start of the class, registered students will receive an email with instructions that will include pre-course work.
Students will rotate thru several evaluated positions on the range such as Lead Instructor, Assitant Instructor, Peer Coach, Range Safety Officer and Line Safety Officer.
We very strongly believe that a good instructor must have a "surplus of skill" and be able to control that skill on demand. While we would love to guarantee that everyone will pass all of the evaluations at or above 90% we realize that won't always be the case. We will do all that we can to teach, coach and mentor and refine your existing skills but we won't compromise our 90% standard on any of the evaluated portions of the program.
